Google local search announcement shows local marketing is increasing in importance
As a fledgling Bristol marketing agency, we were keen to see the Google Marketing bods reveal some very interesting search statistics earlier today. For the first time, Google have announced this year’s top searches by city demographic and Bristol does show some interesting differences compared to many British cities. ‘ Throughout 2014, it has been clear that Google is placing a greater importance on local search, local marketing and localised search results, directing users to businesses closer to them. So Bristol businesses are likely to be found more easily by Bristolians. This follows the logical reasoning that people like to buy local, as seen by the success of recent ‘Shop Local’ and ‘Small Business Saturday’ initiatives.
Google manages trillions of Internet users’ online searches every year, taking more than 92% of all search engine activity. Whether people are searching online for information, shopping, job applications, sports and general news updates, gaming, dating or a plethora of other activities, Google is the holy grail for any marketing agency looking to provide successful online marketing, SEO and social media strategies to businesses.
One of the most consistent Google searches of 2014 was to search for information on ‘how to kill’. Bristol Google searches however were more keen to find out ‘how to squat’ and ‘how to sleep’ suggesting that Bristol is a great place for kissers, and people are trying to get physical in the gym and work on their bodies, having already mastered the art of kissing. Or as Today’s Daily Telegraph reports: Bristol reveals itself to be the most fitness-conscious location in the UK. Meanwhile in Oxford, rather than improve kissing techniques or tone the glutes and hamstrings, people are keen to develop their paraphrasing techniques and Manchester is still suffering from low temperatures as the most searched terms are how to Knit and How to Crochet.
Whilst the Google announcement generates interest in local PR and marketing circles, today’s information release is another pointer that Google is placing increased emphasis on local search. This means looking at online marketing plans and Search Engine Optimisation techniques again for 2015, and adapting online marketing plans to encourage clients to include local search terms more than ever.
Bristol Marketing constantly monitoring Google and other leading search engines to look at changes in search rankings for our clients. We work to ensure a solid online marketing plan for each and every client based on their needs, and we advice them if they are using methods that we feel are reducing in importance to search engines, as well as suggesting new techniques that can help in the ever evolving world of search engine rankings and performance.
It also means more that Google is monitoring social media performance of business, even if they are not directly using Facebook and Twitter follower numbers in their algorithms. Companies that grow their follower groups organically are more likely to have a high concentration of local followers providing a stream of local Internet traffic to the business websites. This is likely to transfer into improved local search listings in upcoming Google algorithm updates. Companies that simply seek to gain as many followers as possible by purchasing followers or other fast-follow techniques are likely to not only have a higher percentage of effort wasted on people that will never convert into customers, but it might negatively affect their future search engine rankings as well.
